Dear friends, at the end of May a series of devastating earthquakes have hit Emilia-Romagna,  the region I come from in Italy. These  caused 26 deaths, injured many hundreds and left more than 15000 homeless and many thousand jobless people. They also destroyed a very large amount of industrial and cultural heritage sites: overall a huge economic damage of 13-14 billion Euros.

The life of so many people have been affected more or less by these natural disasters, and I felt I wanted to do something to try and help and show I was there . Living/working far away in the UK, I was wondering what I could do until a proposal from some colleagues to participate in the yearly London-Cambridge bike ride  seemed like the right thing to do , to try and fund-raise for the Emilia earthquake. Having found the opportunity to sponsor a local charity that deals with diabetes motivates me even more as I have contributed for several years to research about this condition at the Medical Research Council.

And here I am! Trying to raise as much as I can ... but I will need your support, material and moral!! Yes because this summer it never stops raining in England and cycling up and downhill for 96 kilometers from London to Cambridge will be a challenge in many ways!!

All the proceeds will go to the Emilia Romagna Regional Federation for Diabetes  which has opened a special account for dealing with the health and social projects which arise in the aftermath of the earthquake, including eg repairing hospital machinery damaged by the earthquake and helping families - with diabetic children - who lost their home/jobs.

So I count on your help and will keep you posted on whether I get to the end on my bike and in what state :)
