Grazie e siate in buona salute.”

“Greetings from Rwanda,
Here we are trying our best and of course it is not easy when everything is shut down because of COVID-19. Many people are lacking food and this is a very worrying problem. Among them are even the students of my university who live in the surrounding. Recently we managed to distribute some food to them but it was so little that the need is still very high. We have about 200 students who are in need and I do not know if any advocacy can be done in their favor for their survival.

As for the university, we have tried our best to ease the online teaching.

The concern is that the system cannot last for so long, especially that not everything can be done via internet. But again the students cannot pay during this crisis period. Hence, although we have so far managed to pay  the employees, it will not be possible beginning with May. Indeed, it has  become impossible to continue paying as no income is being generated. Soon the personnel of the university will of course land into problems if we do not pay their salaries.

With hope that the virus will allow to open, we do not expect regular payment of school fees as many families are losing their savings during this period. This will also impact on new students willing to join INES.

We all wish to get relieved from this situation but the virus is not yet under control. We call upon people's solidarity to avoid the worst.

Thanks and be healthy. “

This is the message sent on April 22nd, 2020 by Fr Dr Fabien Hagenimana, Rector of the Institute of Applied Sciences INES-Ruhengeri (Rwanda), to the members of the Menya Association of Parma (Italy). The Menya Association, which has as one of its statutory purposes the support and development of university education in Rwanda, with particular attention to the most difficult economic situations, has decided to launch this campaign for the institution of 10 annual scholarships, to allow as many students not to interrupt their university studies.

INES-Ruhengeri is a private higher educational institution. It is one of the few African universities that has explicitly adopted the system of universities of applied sciences. In strategic terms, INES-Ruhengeri introduced the concept of the University of Applied Sciences in 2010, in response to the prevailing discrepancy between academic and labour market needs.

At INES-Ruhengeri the courses taught are mainly based on research results derived from the needs of the community. At present, 3,235 students are enrolled, the staff consists of about 160 employees, 80 of whom are lecturers. INES-Ruhengeri offers a wide range of Bachelor courses in applied sciences and has an extensive structure of laboratories, which are used both for didactic and non-profit purposes.

Relations with the community and local and regional industry are very close and are maintained through six research clusters. INES-Ruhengeri also collaborates with different universities on several projects that are funded by international organizations.

The high risk is that, due to lack of students’ fees, INES sees all past efforts to reach a high level of education quality fail.

We want to support scholarships for one year for 10 students who currently have not the possibility to pay their university fees.

This will also be a way to keep INES alive.
