Samburu Smile

Samburu Smile è un’associazione no-profit, nata nel 2013 dopo che Sergio Mazza, istruttore di minibasket ed ex giocatore professionista, in seguito ad un viaggio in Kenya, decide di provare a realizzare un suo sogno e creare una scuola di basket in Africa. Samburu è il nome della regione dove il progetto nasce e cresce, a 550km a nord di Nairobi ed anche il nome della omonima tribù, una delle 42 presenti in Kenya.
Lo sport è il fulcro dell’intero progetto, che si pone come obiettivo primario quello di consentire l’accesso all’istruzione ai tantissimi bambini dei villaggi della zona di Samburu, fornendo loro strumenti e opportunità di riscatto per migliorare le proprie condizioni di vita.
Un campo da gioco in cemento, pochi palloni e un allenatore danno la possibilità ai giovani Samburu non solo di divertirsi ma anche di acquisire capacità tecniche e cognitive che risultano poi fondamentali per l ‘accesso alle borse di studio statali per l’high school. L’obiettivo dell’organizzazione è quello di favorire l’accesso all’istruzione a quanti più ragazzi possibili, sfruttando lo sport come mezzo per fornire loro gli strumenti e l’opportunità di riscatto attraverso cui migliorare le proprie condizioni di vita.
Il sistema scolastico Keniota, infatti, prevede che le High School private, prerogativa di pochi fortunati in tutto il paese per via dei costi elevati, possano elargire delle borse di studio per meriti sportivi a bambini provenienti dalle Primary School. In questo modo il basket diventa non solo gioco, ma anche strumento per la conquista di un futuro più brillante.
Durante i due mesi circa di permanenza di ogni viaggio in Kenya, il lavoro di Sergio, e dei volontari che decidono di affiancarlo, è focalizzato sulla formazione degli allenatori locali, ad oggi 10,  la costruzione e la manutenzione delle infrastrutture necessarie per svolgere l’attività sportiva delle Academy, e verificare che non ci siano problematiche particolare che ostacolino il percorso di crescita dei ragazzi che aderiscono al progetto.
In questi anni sono state create 3 Academy presso Suguta Marmar, Tuum, Lodungoqwe. Ogni Basketball Academy è organizzata in modo da poter garantire, dal lunedì al venerdì, 2 allenamenti per i bimbi dai 5 agli 8 anni, e 3 allenamenti per quelli dai 9 ai 14 anni, mentre nei weekend le partite si incastrano con le lezioni di LIFE SKILLS, momenti dedicati alla crescita di consapevolezza riguardo il loro ruolo nella società̀ moderna.
43 i bambini che sino ad ora hanno potuto godere delle borse di studio per meriti sportivi grazie al nostro programma.

Samburu Smile is a non-profit association, founded in 2013 by Sergio Mazza, mini basketball instructor and former professional player.  Sergio after a trip to Kenya decided to try to make his dream come true and create a basketball school in Africa. Samburu is the name of the region where the project was born and grows, and also the name of the homonymous tribe, one of the 42 existing in Kenya.
Sport is the core of the whole project, which aims as its primary purpose to provide access to education to the many children of the villages in the area of Samburu, providing them with the tools and opportunities in order to improve their life conditions.
A basketball court, a few balls and a coach give to the young Samburu not only the chance to have fun but also the opportunity to learn technical and mental skills which are fundamental for the access to the High School national scholarships. The purpose of the organization is to facilitate access to education for as many children as possible, using sport as a way to provide them with proper tools and give them the opportunity of  redemption to improve their living conditions. The Kenyan school system, in fact, requires that private high schools, prerogative of a few lucky ones throughout the country because of the high costs, can award scholarships for sporting merits to children from Primary Schools. In this way, basketball becomes not only a game, but also a tool for achieving a brighter future.
Over the course of the two months of each trip to Kenya, Sergio Mazza's work, and of the volunteers who decide to support him, is focused on training local coaches, 10 at the moment, building and maintaining the infrastructure needed, develop sports activities of the Academy and check that there are no particular issues that obstruct the growth process of the children who join the project.
In the last years are born 3 Academy presso Suguta Marmar, Tuum, Lodungoqwe. Each Basketball Academy is organized in a way that guarantees, from Monday to Friday, 2 training sessions for children from 5 to 8 years old, and 3 training sessions for those from 9 to 14 years old, while on weekends the games are linked  with LIFE SKILLS’s lessons, a time dedicated to raising awareness about their role in modern society.
43 are the children who, until now, have been able to enjoy the scholarship for sport merits thanks to our program.
