SOSTIENI IL MIO INTERVENTO CHIRURGICO: UNA NUOVA OPPORTUNITÀ PER GLI AMPUTATI --> DONA ANCHE TU!

Ciao a tutti,

HELP MY SURGERY: A NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR AMPUTATED PEOPLE --> DONATE!

Hello everyone,

I am Alessandro Colombo, 48 y.o., father of three.

When I was 23 I was involved in a motorcycle accident that seriously damaged my left leg and left it impaired. Such an event changed my life forever, but I never gave up.

With all the willpower and dedication I could muster, I rebuilt my life around sport, joining the Italian Cycling Paralympic National Team and taking part in several international Paratriathlon competitions, resulting in making it to the podium, even a European Bronze medal.

In 2015 I decided to leave the competitive scene and now my job involves team building workshops for businesses and counseling and mental coaching.

Unfortunately in recent years, a crippling pain started that has that gravely affected my quality of life. As a result, I have chosen to undergo a trans-tibial amputation of my left leg. I chose Dr. Alexander Gardetto (plastic surgeon) to perform the operation, helped by Dr. Thomas Egger ( orthopedist) who are going to deal with the reconstruction of my left knee with parts taken from my own leg.

I will be the first patient to undergo the surgery technique called TSR (Targeted Sensory Reinnervation), which eliminates any risks of phantom pain, performed together with the amputation itself. This technique will allow the implementation of the prosthetic technology Saphenus®. Such technology will significantly reduce rehabilitation time and improve the walk.

After the rehabilitation period I’ll dedicate myself to get back to sport activities, and my goal is to organize an event, a challenge, one year after the installation of my prosthesis, to check the functionality of the technologies involved and the prosthesis itself.

It’ll be an “Everesting” on the track Nr. 500 on the Mezzocorona Mountain (near Trento, Italy), a climb that I’ll have to run as many times as it takes to reach the same altitude of Mount Everest, 8848 mt (29,000 ft).

The difference in altitude of that track is about 635 mt (2100 ft), that means I’ll have to run it 14 times.

The reason why I’m doing this is because I want everyone in need of an amputation to be able to have access to this technology, and only with research and testing we can give their

lives a new opportunity.

If you can, please consider donating to the surgery and the new SAPHENUS® prosthetic technology!
