I am Giulia and in September I am leaving for Kathmandu to work several months assisting Street Child with setting up permanent operations in Nepal.
Street Child was first set up in 2008 to provide education and help to some of the world's most vulnerable children in Sierra Leone. The organization has since expanded enormously and has until now helped more than 20,000 out of school children gain access to education in Sierra Leone and Liberia.
Following the devastating 2015 earthquake in Nepal, Street Child was asked by UNICEF to work with them during the post-earthquake relief effort. As such, Street Child is now the lead education agency in the district of Okhaldhunga.
Last year's earthquake killed close to 9,000 people, injured 23,000 and rendered more than 1 million children without schools to attend. This humanitarian crisis is now worsened by a complicated political situation, leading to fuel, food and medical shortages.
The longer these children are out of school, the harder it will be for them to return to education and the risk of child trafficking and employment through child labor will intensify.
Street Child is working towards building temporary schools and providing specialized training to teachers, enabling them to support students that have experienced trauma as a result of the earthquake. Until now, Street Child in collaboration with local partners, was able to construct 40 temporary schools and 24 WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) facilities for 3,200 children in Okhaldhunga.
There is much more to be done in Nepal to help ensure long-term educational opportunities for children in both rural and urban areas.
Any help from each one of us would be very appreciated by the people who benefit from the projects, even if it's a small contribute!
