Intendiamo acquistare i materiali utili e necessari a migliorare l'esperienza scolastica.

Support to a Ukrainian school

This fundraiser aims to be of support to the "Gymnasium of Berehovo", in the same-named Ukrainian small town.
The school lacks the basic tools to ensure inclusive teaching. Our objective is to buy useful key tools in order to improve the educational experience.
With a small donation we can be of great help.

My name is Giulia and I teach English to children, teenagers and adults.
Since 2017 I've been working with the “Università Popolare Biellese”, where I hold classes for different ages and on different topics.

In the summer of 2019 I spent 22 days in the Ukraine as a volunteer to be of help in teaching English at school. I replied to the call of “Go Camp”, a Ukrainian association that aims to demolish the linguistic barriers which still nowadays entrap the Country. “Go Camp” was looking for English, French and German speaking volunteers. I was sent to the “Gymnasium of Berehovo”, in the same-named small town close to the Hungarian border.

This school was built by the Austrians in the early 1900s and closed shortly afterwards when the area became subject to the “Soviet Union”. Despite a first reopening right after WWII, only in 1995 did the “Gymnasium” resume is original activity.Today it hosts 300 students aged between 10 and 17 for a total of 13 classes. Improvements to the school building and classrooms introduced over the years by both the Ukrainian government and the local authorities, haven't been enough to modernize the school which lacks the tools needed by institutes responsible for educating the future generations. Regardless of the poor hygienic conditions in both the toilets and the kitchen, the classrooms are in need of tools that can be of help during curricular activities.

Back in Italy, I told my “UPB” colleagues about my experience, which gave immediate birth to the desire to start a fundraiser which would give concrete support to the “Gymnasium”. The goal of our fundraiser is to buy items that allow the creation of small labs and that also lead to an improvement of the quality of printed material students are provided with during classes. This kind of intervention can make the difference especially in those classes with Special Needs Students, who at the moment are penalized. Interactive lessons, instead, will involve the students more effectively, thus enhancing their motivation to study. The “Gymnasium of Berehovo” is the direct beneficiary of this fundraiser and its students, as well as its teachers, will benefit from the given support as they will have a chance to study and teach in an innovated environment compared to the outdated standard in which the Ukraine still finds itself.
